A budget, entry level stick welder is sometimes all that’s needed for small odd jobs around the house. The Hobart Stickmate 205 Ac can be be had for a retail price of just above $300.00 in most retail locations. There aren’t many options at this price point so as you would expect, the 205 AC is a bare bones welder machine that will handle only the smallest jobs. If your the type to break out the old welder only when you absolutely have to, to fix something maybe once or twice a year, the Hobart may be just the ticket.
While this site is dedicated more to industrial level equipment, I thought it could be helpful to provide just a quick rundown of a more basic, affordable outfit. The Stickmate comes with a 15 foot electrode cable and a 10 foot wok cable. This isn’t the best set up, but should be more than adequate for the jobs that this machine is designed to tackle. A 5 foot power cord is just a bit shorter than I would’ve lied to see, even at this bargain price. I don’t think it would be asking too much to see a 6 or 7 foot cable, but really, this is a minor complaint.
The Stickmate did everything it was supposed to when I put it to work. It was nice to have the machine be so portable, I could see myself getting one of these welders just for the portability of it. The welding process was very smooth. The Stickmate provided stable and adequate power for most small to medium small welding jobs. A stick welder comes in very handy for these smaller applications and that’s where this Hobart really stood out.
All in all this is a great little machine and if your looking for the least amount of money spent and can live with only being able to use a stick welder, the Hobart Stickmate 205 AC deserves a closer look.
